Noctilucent clouds, also known as polar mesospheric clouds (PMC), are a rare and fascinating meteorological phenomenon. They are luminous cloud formations that occur in the mesosphere, the Earth's highest atmospheric layer, at altitudes of around 76 to 85 kilometers (47 to 53 miles) above the surface. Noctilucent clouds are primarily observed in high-latitude regions, such as the polar regions, during the summer months.

One of the most striking features of noctilucent clouds is their ability to glow or shine in the night sky. They can exhibit a radiant silver or electric blue luminescence, which gives them a captivating appearance. This luminosity is caused by sunlight reflecting off microscopic crystals of icy cosmic dust that fall into the atmosphere.
